Julia, a descendant of George Washington's family, was a formidable businesswoman and community leader.

Matthew Scott's entrepreneurial spirit led him to amass vast tracts of land in Illinois, Iowa, and Tennessee, making him one of the largest landowners in the region. His ventures included founding the town of Chenoa, Illinois, and the McLean County Coal Company, which became the most successful coal mine in McLean County. After Matthew's death in 1891, Julia took the reins of the family business, managing 10,000 acres of farmland and serving as the principal stockholder and president of the coal company.
