However, the economic downturn following the Florida land boom of the 1920s led to its closure in 1926. The collection was subsequently donated to a local elementary school.

Reviving the library in January 1946, community efforts saw it reopening at the Boca Raton Army Air Field. Despite facing challenges, including severe hurricane damage in 1947, the library persevered. By 1948, it found a new home within the city's Municipal Building, leading to the establishment of its first Board of Directors. The library continued to grow, receiving significant support from benefactors like J. Myer Schine and Hildegarde Schine, who contributed new furnishings and bookcases.

The 1950s marked a period of cultural enrichment, with the library hosting art exhibits in collaboration with the Art Guild of Boca Raton. Although plans for a library and cultural arts center did not materialize, the library moved to a dedicated building on NW 2nd Avenue in 1961. This location, now the site of the current Downtown Library, underwent several expansions and renovations over the years, reflecting the community's commitment to its growth.

Today, the Boca Raton Public Library operates two state-of-the-art facilities: the Downtown Library and the Spanish River Library and Community Center. The Downtown Library, located at 400 N.W. Boca Raton Boulevard, opened its doors in June 2013. Designed in the Mediterranean architectural style of Addison Mizner, this 41,932 square foot building boasts 70 public access computers, study rooms, and event spaces. It was constructed in line with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification requirements, emphasizing sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The Spanish River Library and Community Center, situated at 1501 N.W. Spanish River Boulevard, opened in January 2008. This 40,940 square foot facility also reflects Addison Mizner's architectural influence and offers public spaces for meetings, gatherings, and events.
