By 1863, Father George Fendrick and his parishioners had founded the German Roman Catholic Association of Dubuque, with the ambitious goal of constructing a new and larger church. Their efforts culminated in the purchase of an orchard, the future site of Saint Mary's Church.

Construction and Dedication

Construction of the new church began in 1864, under the guidance of architect John Mullany, known for his work on the Cathedral of St. Raphael. The parishioners, driven by faith and determination, undertook much of the labor themselves. Despite financial challenges, with only $3.03 left in the treasury at one point, the community rallied together to raise the necessary funds.

On February 10, 1867, Bishop John Hennessy dedicated the newly completed Saint Mary's Church. The church quickly became a spiritual hub for the growing Catholic community in Dubuque, serving as the mother parish for several other churches in the area.

Architectural Marvel
