The cornerstone was laid in June of that year, and by June 21, 1908, the cathedral was dedicated. However, the cathedral's journey was not without its trials. On December 21, 1909, a devastating fire nearly destroyed the building, causing the ceiling to collapse. Despite this setback, the resilient community salvaged and restored the cathedral, reopening its doors in 1910.

The significance of the cathedral grew in 1931 when Pope Pius XI appointed Thomas Kiely Gorman as the first Bishop of Reno, officially establishing the Diocese of Reno. This elevation transformed the church into a cathedral, complete with a bishop's chair that remains to this day. Over the years, the cathedral has undergone several renovations, including a significant retrofit in 2010 to stabilize its foundation, ensuring that it continues to stand as a beacon of faith and history.

An Artistic Sanctuary

On the right side, the Saints of the New Law are represented, with Peter and John taking prominent positions and Paul seen in the background. The mural also features Augustine of Hippo, Clare of Assisi, Charles Borromeo, Paschal Baylon, and Pope Pius X, who is shown urging a modern working family to receive the sacrament of communion. Durante has a deep personal connection to the cathedral, having received his first communion and confirmation there. He even celebrated his first mass as a new priest within its walls. Fr. Beda Martirez serves as the parochial vicar, assisting in the spiritual leadership of the cathedral community.
